April is Stress Awareness Month, a gentle reminder to slow down and take stock of how stress may be affecting our bodies, minds—and yes, even our skin.

As a facialist, I often see how stress can quietly show up in the skin: increased sensitivity, flare-ups, dullness, or breakouts. But beyond treatment, one of the most powerful things we can do is look after our whole selves, because healthy skin starts from within.

Here are five simple, supportive ways to help manage stress and show your skin a little love this month:

1. Pause and Breathe

It sounds so simple—but taking just a few slow, deep breaths can help calm the nervous system. When we’re stressed, our bodies produce more cortisol (the stress hormone), which can trigger inflammation and worsen existing skin conditions like acne, rosacea or eczema.

Try this: A few times a day, pause what you're doing and take five slow, intentional breaths. Place your hand on your chest or stomach and feel each inhale and exhale. Even one minute of this can make a difference.

2. Make Time for Your Evening Routine

When life gets hectic, our skincare ritual can be the first thing to slip. But those few minutes at the end of the day can feel grounding and soothing—and your skin will thank you for it.

Try this: Turn your evening routine into a mini ritual. Light a candle, slow down your application, and take a moment to gently massage your products in. This not only supports circulation and product absorption, but also helps you unwind.

3. Protect Your Sleep

Poor sleep is a big stressor—and it shows in our skin. That ‘tired’ look we try to mask with concealer is often your skin asking for rest and repair time.

Try this: Aim for a consistent sleep-wake routine and create a calming wind-down before bed. Avoid scrolling on your phone for at least 30 minutes before you sleep—blue light and stimulation from social media can keep your nervous system on high alert.

4. Nourish from the Inside

Stress can often lead to skipped meals, sugar cravings, or caffeine overload. While it’s completely okay to have comfort foods now and again, your skin loves consistency and nourishment too.

Try this: Keep a bottle of water nearby and make a point to hydrate throughout the day. Add skin-supportive foods like berries, avocado, nuts, and leafy greens to your meals when you can.

5. Take a ‘Digital Detox’ Moment

Constant notifications, emails, and information overload can be incredibly draining. Giving yourself a small break from screens can help reset your nervous system and give your mind—and your skin—some breathing room.

Try this: Choose one pocket of the day (even just 15–30 minutes) where you step away from your phone. Take a short walk, read a few pages of a book, or simply sit quietly with a cup of tea.

You Deserve Care, Too

Stress is a normal part of life, but it doesn’t have to take over. These small moments of self-care can create a big shift—on your skin and your overall well-being.

This month, I hope you’re reminded that looking after yourself isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. And if you ever feel like your skin needs a little extra support, I'm always here to guide you.
